Machine Introduction

The Full-Auto HDAF Expanded Mesh Spiral Coiling Machine is an automatic forming machine designed for manufacturing spiral cylinders from expanded metal mesh used in heavy-duty air filters. It incorporates a decoiler, mesh feeding mechanism, flattening unit, spiral forming spindle, cutting assembly, and PLC touchscreen control system into a compact production line.

Full-Auto HDAF Expanded Mesh Spiral Coiling Machine

The expanded mesh is continuously fed into the machine, flattened before entering the forming section, spirally wound around the selected die, and automatically cut once the preset length is reached. It is widely used for producing outer protective meshes and support tubes for heavy-duty truck filters, construction equipment filters, and industrial dust collection cartridges. The machine processes 109mm-wide steel strip with a thickness range of 0.25–0.4mm and supports finished diameters from Φ80mm to Φ500mm. Fifteen sets of interchangeable dies (sizes 13–35) allow operators to switch product diameters quickly by following the corresponding tooling specifications.

Applications & Machine Configuration

Typical Applications

  • Spiral forming of expanded mesh outer guards for heavy-duty air filters
  • Production of expanded mesh support tubes
  • Manufacturing of inner mesh cylinders for dust collector filter elements
  • Machine Configuration

  • Decoiler: Supports the steel strip coil and allows feeding alignment adjustment.
  • Mesh Feeding Mechanism: Provides both inching and automatic feeding functions.
  • Flattening Unit: Levels the steel strip before forming.
  • Spiral Forming Assembly: Includes the main spindle, forming dies (15 sets, sizes 13–35), locking wheel, and edge-forming wheel.
  • Cutting Assembly: Pneumatic cutter combined with an adjustable measuring frame for length control.
  • PLC Control System: Touchscreen interface with manual/automatic operation, automatic cutter reset, and real-time speed display.
  • Auxiliary Parts: Die support rod, die mounting slot, and cutter rod stopper.
  • How the Machine Works

The machine continuously feeds expanded mesh through the feeding rollers into the flattening section, where the material is straightened before entering the rotating spindle. Guided by the selected forming die, the mesh is spirally coiled into a cylindrical shape. Once the preset tube length is reached, the pneumatic cutter automatically completes the cutting process, allowing the finished mesh cylinder to be removed before the next production cycle begins.

    Production Steps

    1. Material Preparation: Mount the steel strip coil onto the decoiler, align the feeding inlet, and trim the strip end to an approximately 30° taper.
    2. Tool Installation: Select the appropriate forming die according to the required diameter and secure it using two M4×10 countersunk screws. Adjust the die support rod for reinforcement.
    3. Machine Setup: Select manual mode on the touchscreen, perform the automatic cutter reset, and set the machine angle and cutter parameters according to the specification chart.
    4. Initial Feeding: Feed the strip slowly into the die using the inching function while manually guiding the first spiral turn.
    5. Automatic Production: Switch to automatic mode and adjust the operating speed. The machine continuously forms spiral mesh cylinders.
    6. Cutting Process: During initial setup, remove excess material manually after one revolution if necessary. During normal production, the cutter automatically trims the mesh to the preset length.
    7. Finished Product Removal: Remove the completed mesh cylinder and continue the next production cycle.

    Performance Advantages

  • Wide Processing Capacity: Produces spiral mesh cylinders from Φ80mm to Φ500mm, with quick changeover using 15 interchangeable die sets.
  • Continuous Automatic Production: Feeding, flattening, coiling, and cutting are completed in one uninterrupted process, achieving 10–20 pieces per minute.
  • Flexible Length Adjustment: The measuring frame allows quick length adjustment while ensuring accurate cutting.
  • Excellent Surface Finish: Finished mesh cylinders have a smooth outer surface without requiring additional grinding or finishing.
  • Reduced Material Waste: The spiral coiling process maximizes material utilization, requiring only a simple tapered strip end before production.
  • Stable PLC Control: The PLC and touchscreen provide manual and automatic operation modes, automatic cutter positioning, and real-time production monitoring.
  • Compact and Easy to Maintain: The machine occupies relatively little floor space, and routine maintenance mainly consists of lubricating transmission components and cleaning the cutter.
  • Installation Guidelines

    1. Install the machine on a clean, level, and well-ventilated floor away from excessive heat and dust.
    2. Leave at least 1 meter of clearance around the machine.
    3. Move the machine with a forklift, secure it firmly, and level it before operation.
    4. Connect the machine to a dedicated 380V/50Hz power supply with proper grounding.
    5. Supply compressed air at 0.6MPa.
    6. Check the power cable, emergency stop switch, and safety guards before startup.
    7. Before initial operation, manually rotate the machine to ensure there is no mechanical interference.
    8. Remove the cutter rod stopper when producing mesh cylinders below Φ200mm, and reinstall it for diameters above Φ200mm.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why is the finished mesh cylinder diameter larger or smaller than required?

A: An oversized diameter is generally caused by insufficient pressure between the feeding rollers, while an undersized diameter usually results from excessive pressure. Adjust the feeding roller clearance first, then fine-tune the locking wheel if necessary.

Q2: Why does the spiral seam separate after forming?

A: The edge-forming wheel may not be applying enough pressure. Increase its pressure to ensure the seam is securely locked.

Q3: How should material feeding problems be handled?

A: Check that the strip end has been cut to an approximately 30° taper and that the feeding inlet is properly aligned. If the material jams, remove the inlet guide plate, clear the blockage, reinstall the guide plate, and restart production.

Q4: Is there any difference when producing cylinders below or above Φ200mm?

A: Yes. Remove the cutter rod stopper for diameters below Φ200mm, and reinstall it when producing cylinders larger than Φ200mm to ensure proper coiling and cutting.
